It would not be an overstatement to say that working with Steve Hoffacker has been a life changing experience.  Almost four years ago, I was introduced to Steve and his holistic training model, and after working with him I am physical stronger, have increased flexibility, am better able to manage my stress, sleep better, and more optimistic about my fitness and overall wellbeing compared to when I started.

This was not a foregone conclusion.  I am forty-one years’ old and have been dealing with arthritis of my left hip for over twenty years.  I was an active athlete through high school and after developing hip and groin pain was diagnosed with femeroacetabular impingement (FAI, or “impingement”).  Over the course of many years, chronic inflammation slowly led to the reduction in activities including giving up sports, then routine exercise, and ultimately leading to a life of daily pain and negative impact of most normal activities.  Along the way, I had steroid joint injections and a significant surgery on my hip to clean up the cartilage and resurface the bone.  While this helped reduce the pain, after years of false starts, I had not been able to successfully maintain active fitness or exercise.

Approaching forty, I was acutely aware of the long term consequences limited activity has to both my physical and mental health and was discouraged.  After a chance meeting with Steve, he heard my story and offered the chance to work together.  Candidly, I was not overly optimistic that much would change.  I was wrong.  Steve and his team took a very patient, intensely personalized, and holistic approach to really understand my baseline strength and flexibility, and injury/discomfort patterns.  While the progress was slow at first, and there have been bumps and redirections along the way, I am just fundamentally in a different place than four years ago.  At that time, I worried a hip replacement was imminent and two orthopedic surgeons told me there was nothing I could realistically do to change the outcome – just tough it out as long as possible, then do the surgery.  Now, I firmly believe that surgery is years in the future, and at the rate I’m improving I can actually consider the chance I could avoid it altogether.  Steve is just different – he has a passion for his craft that is unrivaled.  I would recommend him to anyone looking to meaningfully improve their health and fitness, especially those that may have struggled with past injuries or numerous false starts getting on a regular fitness routine.

Playing sports in high school I was put through the same ‘cookie cutter’ workout as every other athlete.  I saw minimal physical improvement, but the true frustration came with the frequent and unnecessary injuries.  Near the end of my high school experience I was genuinely convinced that I was physically not capable of: A) gaining strength, B) simple daily comfort due to back/neck injuries, C) enjoying fitness again!  I started seeking out physical trainers to help get me to where I wanted to be in terms of my body, but I still found myself struggling with popping joints, noticeable in-balances of strength, etc…

As if the clouds opened up, I finally found Steve.  Even after a few sessions I could tell that something was going to change, and month after month led to increased physical improvements.  By the time I was heading off to college in the northeast, I felt like a different person.  In retrospect, I shouldn’t have been worried about keeping up my physical improvements without Steve’s watchful gaze; many trainers just tell you to go lower, lift harder, run more, but not at Hoffackers.  A session with Steve isn’t just a tiring workout, but it is an educational period as well.  Steve made sure that I truly understood every exercise and its benefits.  Working in 5 states and 2 countries for various internships while in college, my physical health has been a great resource, but Steve’s transformation of my body has indirectly benefitted me in other ways as well.  Whether it is focusing in a meeting without back spasms or sleeping through the night before a big exam, my physical health has benefitted me all around.  Genuinely, I can’t thank Steve Hoffacker enough for the difference he has made in my life as a student, an employee, and a human being.

One thing I have learned and have experienced in life is that it can toss us about and present many challenges.  Over time, I have battled food allergies, autoimmune disease (arthritis) and breast cancer to name a few.  Most recently I had meniscus surgery and found that it was easier and less painful to sit on the sidelines than try an activity and hurt for days.

I found some great caregivers who treated me according to their respective specialties but I did not seem to get any better nor move forward. They were not putting all the pieces together – were not looking at the body as a whole.  Consequentially, I began to realize that I was starting to participate less in the activities that I had always enjoyed.

Then I found Steve Hoffacker who has changed my life!  Instead of sitting on the sidelines, Steve has showed me the way to get back in the game.  We are building a solid foundation of strength which leads to endurance, ease of movement (things I had not done in quite a while) and confidence. Steve is very knowledgeable in all aspects of physical fitness and with his initial assessment and comprehensive approach, has alleviated my fear of “getting hurt”.   Aging successfully is a process and a different way of thinking about exercise and fitness and I am confident that I am on the right track.
